Once again, Inter Miami is on the cover of every major sports media outlet due to a new departure. Earlier on Tuesday, Federico Redondo was in Spain awaiting to sign with a new club.
However, later that same day, the Herons were linked with an advanced negotiation to try to sign Gonzalo Piovi, a Cruz Azul defender.
Although the Herons are trying to solve defensive issues, they let a club legend go. According to GiveMeSport, Inter Miami reached an agreement with Charlotte FC for Drake Callender.
Did Inter Miami make the right move?
Firstly, the club's action was wrong. According to the mentioned outlet, Callender was not consulted about this move and was surprised by the decision.
Drake Callender was essential for the League Cup trophy and the Supporters' Shield. In both tournaments, the GK played all the games. However, after the 2024 season, the problems started to arrive.
Callender battled with many injuries this year, and with the signing of Oscar Ustari, the US goalkeeper was losing his position.
Also, the club has started giving minutes to Rocco Rios Novo, due to Ustari's injury, and the youngster has performed better than expected.
Knowing that Ustari became the starting goalkeeper, and Ríos Novo is the second option, Callender wasn't going to see the minutes he deserved.
It could be considered a reasonable move, considering his injury history. Although the details of the deal are not official, the mentioned outlet stated that it was based on a trade.
Drake Callender's stats
Callender spent his career with Inter Miami, playing 118 games. During his years at the club, the 27-year-old player conceded 214 goals and had 21 clean sheets.
With the Herons, Callender won a Leagues Cup, Supporters' Shield, and goalkeeper of the year in the 22/23 season.
