Freedom to Dream: Biden honors Lionel Messi with the Presidential Medal of Freedom

The Inter Miami captain is one of 19 leaders chosen by President Joe Biden in December to receive the United States’ most prestigious civilian award.

Messi did not attend Saturday’s ceremony, having previously notified White House staff that he could not attend because of a scheduling conflict and prior commitments. He said in a letter that he appreciates the gesture and hopes to meet Biden in the near future.

The Herons’ captain earned the 2024 Major League Soccer MVP award after totaling 36 goal contributions (20 goals, 16 assists) in 19 matches. He will lead Inter Miami in a preseason friendly against defending Liga MX champion Club America on Jan. 18 in Las Vegas. The Herons will play a second preseason match against Sunshine State rival Orlando City SC Feb. 14 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

The club will begin its quest for the CONCACAF Champions Cups at Sporting Kansas City on Feb. 18 and will host New York City FC on Feb. 22 to open the 2025 MLS season.
