Inter Miami find out opponents for Club World Cup
Palmeiras - Brazil
The Green and Whites are one of the biggest club’s in Brazil and the whole of South America. Based in the city of São Paulo, they were formed on the 26th August 1914, 110 years ago as Palestra Itália. Founded by Italian immigrants in the city, the club changed it’s name on September 14th 1942 as Brazil joined the Allies in the Second World War against Italy and the Axis powers. They have the most league titles in Campeonato Brasilero Série A with 12, and the latest two of them coming back-to-back in 2022 and 2023.
However a third title in a row doesn’t look likely, as the Brazilian league ends this weekend, and Palmeiras are three points behind leaders and new Copa Libertadores champions Botafogo. Whilst the Green and Whites have 15th placed Fluminense, who need a win to guarantee their own safety from getting relegated, Botafogo are at home to Palmeiras’ big rivals São Paulo.
With nothing to play for and Copa Libertadores football for next season already secured, reports are coming out of Brazil that São Paulo are just going to throw this game so their rivals don’t win the league for a third time in a row, something that has only ever been done once before in Brazil, by (and you might have guessed it) São Paulo! Palmeiras also have 3 Copa Libertadores wins, in 1999, 2020 and 2021. They play their home games at Allianz Parque with a capacity of 43,713. They are also the club that produced teenage sensation Endrick, who made a 39-million-euro move to Real Madrid.
