Fair to say, Nu Stadium does not yet feel like home for Inter Miami. In Saturday night's Sunshine State derby, the Herons raced into a 3-0 lead after little over half an hour; Ian Fray, Telasco Segovia and Lionel Messi all on target. However, Orlando City roared back to claim a famous 4-3 win in South Florida, with Martín Ojeda bagging a hat-trick, before Tyrese Spicer won it in injury time.

As a result, Miami are yet to win any of their first four matches at their new home, a rare streak in Major League Soccer history that very few others have achieved.

Inter Miami's first four results at Nu Stadium

  • Saturday 2 May: Inter Miami 3-4 Orlando City.
  • Saturday 25 April: Inter Miami 1-1 New England Revolution.
  • Saturday 11 April: Inter Miami 2-2 Red Bull New York.
  • Saturday 4 April: Inter Miami 2-2 Austin FC.

Just three points from their opening four home games as defending MLS Cup champions is certainly not what the ownership nor the fanbase were hoping for in 2026. This has already been a chaotic year for Miami, with head coach Javier Mascherano surprisingly resigning last month, taking all of his coaching staff with him, too.

For now, Guillermo Hoyos is in charge but, after winning his first two matches on the road in Denver and Salt Lake, the search for that illusive maiden victory at Nu Stadium goes on. So, just how difficult is it for an MLS team to move into a new home?

Well, let's look at how other clubs have fared in their first four fixtures at a new home. Note, only existing teams who have moved stadium are included, not expansion teams starting out.

Twenty of MLS' current 30 clubs have moved stadiums, some doing so more than once, and most more successfully than Inter Miami. Of these 20 teams, 11 marked the grand-opening of their new home with a victory, D.C. United the most-recent side to achieve this. LA Galaxy, Houston, Orlando and Atlanta all collected at least 10 points from their first four new-home matches.

At the other end of spectrum, only two clubs have collected fewer than Miami's three points from their first four matches at a new home. They are FC Dallas, who took six attempts to win in Frisco, and unwanted record-holders FC Cincinnati. The Orange and Blue failed to win any of their first nine matches at TQL Stadium -- Miami was the first-ever visiting side -- before eventually defeating Toronto in September 2021.

This, though was a completely different context. Cincinnati collected the dreaded "Wooden Spoon" at the end of each of their first three MLS campaigns, winning only 14 of 91 regular season matches (home or away) during this period. On the flip side, Inter Miami has the best player who has ever lived, on the best roster in the league, are reigning MLS Cup winners, and set the single-season points record in 2024. Thus, it is not a surprise that supporters are demanding more.

Next up, the Herons have two away games in Toronto and then Cincinnati, before Portland Timbers visit Nu Stadium on 17 May. Considering that the Timbers are third-bottom in the Western Conference, with former Herons' manager Phil Neville a manager under pressure, surely it'll be fifth-time lucky for the champions at their Nu home.
