On Saturday night, Inter Miami made history, as they broke the MLS regular season points record - getting to 74 points, with the record previously held by New England Revolution, the team that Inter Miami beat to break their own record. Funny how football works, sometimes.
The win was thanks in no small part to the greatest of all time, Lionel Messi. Having come on as a sub at 2-2, within 20 seconds he had played a huge part in a goal, feeding Jordi Alba in behind with a pass that pierced the Revolution back line, with Alba squaring for Cremaschi to score.
Then, from the 79th to 89th minute, Messi would score three of his own, with an incredible hat-trick. One goal from outside the box, one goal from making a these days lesser spotted run in behind, and one goal from getting the end of a ball across the box.
With this hat-trick, he has now become the outright top scorer in Inter Miami's history. Before the game, Leanardo Campana was the club's top scorer, with 32 goals, but Messi's hat-trick has pulled him out in front - with 33. I'm sure Campana won't mind, and will be honoured to have handed over the baton to the best player we have ever seen.
In fact, the Ecuadorian striker played a part. It was his scooped through ball that lead to the hat-trick goal, with his pass finding Luis Suarez, who played the ball across for Messi to smash home. Some great South American link up all round, from three of Inter Miami's fourth highest ever goalscorers.
Ironically, the other player in the top three, Gonzalo Higuain, in third, with 29, is also South American - and a long term international team mate of Messi. Suarez, with 24 goals to his name, will be hoping to get there by the end of the play-offs.
Another record being closed in on is assists. Robert Taylor is currently first, with 18, but is badly out of form. After his two assists in the win against the Revolution, Alba is now on 17 - tied with Leo. Could we see a battle for that record during the play-offs? If it happens, then it could be going hand-in-hand with a productive play-off run, so let's hope so.
