Alonso Moved From Mexico to Miami

In December 2019, Inter Miami named Alonso its first manager in club history.

But, his past may have been an indication as to what his future had in store.

Prior to joining Inter Miami, Alonso spent four seasons at the helm of Monterrey in Liga MX.

However, he was terminated months after leading the Mexican side to the 2019 Concacaf Champions League title.

Alonso spent the four years before that leading Monterrey’s rival, Pachuca — including a 2017 Concacaf Champions League title.

It seemed a little odd at the time that a team would part ways with the manager who just led them to the pinnacle of Western Hemisphere success by winning the Champions League title.

But, Alonso had pedigree, both as a manager and a player.

As a manager, he had the distinction of being the only manager to win the Champions League title with two different teams.

During his playing days, after starting his career in his native Uruguay and Argentina, Alonso played for five teams in La Liga in as many years: Valencia CF, Atletico Madrid, Racing de Santander, Malaga CF and Real Murcia.

He also managed seven appearances for the Uruguay Men’s National Team in two years.

The biggest issue — which no one seemed to mind in 2019 when he was appointed to lead Inter Miami — was that Alonso never stayed in one place for very long.

He had the credentials, but never staying in one place… either as a manager or player… would be a yellow flag at least.
