The Barcelona Connection: Luis Suarez

Starting in the summer, we mentioned the connection between Lionel Messi’s former Barcelona teammate, Luis Suarez coming to South Florida.

Of course, at the time, Suarez was just one of many European players with links to Messi being rumored with a move to Inter Miami.

The back-and-forth went on through July until Suarez was rumored to want to tear up the remainder of his contract with Brazilian side Gremio to facilitate a faster move to Inter Miami.

At the time, Gremio’s coach officially ended the speculation by stating that the “soap opera is over now” at the end of July.

But, other things were working against a summer move for Suarez.

The first was the fact that Gremio has Suarez under contract until the end of the current Brazilian season and Gremio never had any intention of releasing Suarez before the contract ran its course.

The second was that Inter Miami had no roster spot for Suarez. There were no designated player spots to add him as an international player and the use of General Allocation Money (GAM) or Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) was never in the conversation.

Thus, there was no way Suarez could come to Inter Miami during the summer transfer window.

But, things have now changed.
