Inter Miami Extend Leonardo Campana’s Contract
What Campana’s Extension Means For Inter Miami
That is a much more loaded question to answer.
By keeping Campana, and extending his contract, Inter Miami has to be careful not to run afoul of league salary rules. While the financial details of the extension weren’t made public, it likely came with some kind of an increase in pay.
According to SportTrac, Campana was earning $550,000 per year as the Young Designated Player on the side.
It’s great that Inter Miami has decided to keep Campana as I believe he has a ton of potential and upside we haven’t even seen yet.
His pairing with Messi has been strong and I expect that to only get stronger into next season.
But one player it could spell bad news for is Josef Martinez.
The Venezuelan is earning $4 million this season, which doesn’t hurt Inter Miami’s payroll as he is a regular Designated Player. However, Campana is 23 and whatever his new contract is valued at, $350,000 will count against the team’s cap.
Additionally, Martinez has somewhat diminished upon the arrival of Messi. While Campana has seven goals this season, Martinez only has six.
Now, none of this is written in stone and it is entirely possible Inter Miami keep Martinez for another season, but it may take some creative work on the part of the team’s front office to make it work.
Regardless, glad Campana is locked down and we roll on, La Familia.
