About Nicolas Freire

While he doesn’t bring the international pedigree of other Inter Miami signings, Freire has spent most of his career playing for squads abroad.

He started his career in 2011 with River Plate U20 before moving from Argentinos Jrs. To CA Torque in Uruguay in 2017.

A year later, he was on loan to PEC Zwolle in the Netherlands. While with CA Torque, Freire was loaned to Palmeiras in Brazil and LDU Quito in Ecuador before signing with UNAM Pumas in 2019.

Since joining the Mexican side, Freire was loaned to Greek giants Olympiacos in 2023 and is heading to South Florida for the 2024 season.

He’s been a part of three trophy-winning seasons — the Brazilian title with Palmeiras in 2018, the Ecuador Cup in 2018 and the Argentinian national title with Argentinos Juniors in 2017.

Despite moving from place to place, Freire’s market value has increased over the years.

From $750,000, Freire’s market value jumped to $2.5 million at the time of his signing on loan with Inter Miami, according to Transfermarkt.us.

In 129 matches, Freire showed some offensive prowess, scored six goals while notched two assists.

However, for Inter Miami, the focus will — and should be — on defense.

The Herons have never been known for their stout defense, but I can see where Freire could help change that.

I have a lot of faith in the development of Aviles, but he’s still a very young product. Kryvtsov shows flashes of strength, but there have been some consistency issues with the Ukrainian international that leave more questions than answers.

Freire is a good loan signing that poses little risk for Inter Miami.

That said, I don’t think the squad is done. There is still need to shore up the defense and, with Facundo Farias out for the season, work on midfield reinforcements is still necessary.

But, that’s just my opinion… I could be wrong.
