It was all going so well for Inter Miami. Undefeated in four games, in with a chance of going through to the quarter-finals of the US Open Cup, Ecuador forward Leonardo Campana starting to bang in the goals. Then they got dumped out of the cup on penalties by Orlando City, and now all they have to look forward to is the slog of the league season.

Alright, that might be a bit harsh. Results are generally trending up, Gonzalo Higuain is parked firmly on the bench, and with just one point separating them in 10th from Atlanta in 7th, a playoff push is a legitimate possibility. It's fun! There's hope in Miami!

They play the Portland Timbers on Saturday evening, the game setting up 10th in the Eastern Conference vs 10th in the West at the DRV PNK Stadium.

Inter Miami team news

The Herons will still be without Brek Shea as he continues his comeback from a hamstring injury, although he should be available for selection in the not-too-distant future.

Nick Marsman will continue his prolonged absence too, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem thanks to the good form of backup Drake Callender – the young American winning two of WhoScored's man of the match awards in his five MLS starts. George Acosta remains out, but with only six minutes of MLS action to his name this season, that shouldn't be too much of a headache for Phil Neville.

Expect Gonzalo Higuain to keep his place as a not very impactful impact sub off the bench.

Portland Timbers team news

Not too much 'new' news for the Timbers this weekend, expect the same players to be out and the same players to be in. Felipe Mora, Diego Gutierrez and George Fochive all remain unavailable.

Inter Miami vs Portland Timbers score prediction

It's a little tricky to confidently predict an Inter Miami win in almost any given week, but this week...this week might be the one.

Despite the penalty kick loss to Orlando, the Herons are now unbeaten in 90 minutes in five straight games, and have won four of their last five home games in all competitions – with that one outlier a 2-2 draw against DC United.

Portland, on the other hand, have won just one road game all season. That win came over two months ago, and now they're on a streak of five straight failures to win in away games (including two against teams who had a player sent odd).

What are we saying here? We're saying that Miami are the favourites here, and should get back into winning ways in what might be an ugly match.

Prediction: Inter Miami 2-0 Portland Timbers
