Inter Miami lost 3-2 against Columbus Crew for the round of 16 of the Leagues Cup. The Herons controlled the game for the first half; Miami dominated. But the second half was another story. Columbus found and exploited Miami's defensive flaws.
Although I would love to make a match recap, I will discuss the winners and losers among Inter Miami's players.
I know more players could take part in this list. But I wanted to name the most influential players for both categories. The rest of the players are not here because they had an average game, in my opinion.
Winners
Yannick Bright: Maybe one of the best Heron players in the last couple of games. His consistently solid performance has made him a valuable asset to the entire team. His aggression in recovering the ball is essential for Inter Miami. For the last couple of games, he has been the backbone of Miami's defense, becoming a fifth defender, but on his spot, high in the midfield. In heavy games against solid rivals, Bright only boosts his game. The only decision Tata can make is to leave him in the starting lineup.
Diego Gomez: Inter Miami's best player of the game. As Simple as that. Since returning from the 2023 winter break, Gomez has become the most influential player of the team. He scored one goal and gave Suarez the assist to put the score 2-0 in favor of Inter Miami. His departure will leave a massive gap for the Heron's attack.
Without Messi on the field, Gomez has become the spine of Inter Miami's attack. Every play, every chance has to go through him to get the most out of it. On game night against Colombus Crew, he attacked, recovered, and orchestrated every attack. He showed his quality and the type of player he is.
Matias Rojas: If Gomez was the best, he is the second-best player against Columbus Crew. Once again, Rojas showed how crucial he is on the attack, scoring a goal with a good-placed header. The Paraguayan connection is giving Inter Miami the best moments on the field. Both players understand each other, and with their playing quality, they become the two most dangerous weapons of the Herons.
Loser
Weigandt: Among the 11 starters, Chelo Weigandt was the only one who left the most doubts. Unfortunately for Weigandt, his poor game performance is repetitious, and the worst part is that it has become the same pattern. His zone coverage is slow, his placement on the field is mediocre. Whenever he receives the ball, it appears that he is afraid to advance on the offensive. On the Columbus game, his early yellow card conditioned him for the rest of the game, and everyone knows what a premature yellow determines; he can't play rough in the mark, and any little foul could end up with him expelled.
But at the end of the day, this is football or soccer, whatever you call it, a game where you can win or lose. Inter Miami needs to forget this game and start thinking about winning the MLS; we have the team to accomplish the title.
Do you agree with the names? Which other player could be part of this category?
