Yes, he only played in six matches, but is that really a big deal for Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi to be named a finalist for Major League Soccer’s Newcomer of the Year?

Inter Miami’s Messi A Finalist for Newcomer of the Year

So he only played in six matches for Inter Miami after joining over the summer.

So it wasn’t every single match after he came to South Florida.

Regardless, Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi was named one of three finalists for Major League Soccer’s Newcomer of the Year.

He’s a finalist for the award alongside Giorgios Giakoumakis of Atlanta United and St. Louis City SC midfielder Eduard Lowen.

After joining the club on a free transfer, Messi went on to score 10 goals and lead Inter Miami to the 2023 Leagues Cup title and to the finals of the U.S. Open Cup after defeating FC Cincinnati.

Across his appearances, Messi played a total of 372 minutes — including four starts after he suffered a leg injury on international duty for Argentina.

One thing that can’t be overlooked is what Messi did for MLS off the pitch. Merchandise and ticket sales went through the roof after it was official he was joining the Herons.
