Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi Nominated For MLS Newcomer

Yes, he only played in six matches, but is that really a big deal for Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi to be named a finalist for Major League Soccer’s Newcomer of the Year?

Guff For Being A Finalist

To me, this it’s an easy argument to make for this award to go to Messi.

While he may have only played in six league matches, his impact to the club, the league and the sport in North America was, needless to say… profound.

The Newcomer of the Year doesn’t have to score the most goals, have the most assists or make the most saves of all newcomers.

It’s kind of like the Most Valuable Player. The value part doesn’t necessarily come from goals, assists or saves… it’s about value to the club.

These awards tend to be more about popularity than performance on and off the pitch… which is a little shameful.

What player has the biggest impact on his/her club for the season? Every team — even Toronto FC — has at least one.

The player with the most goals could be absolute poison in the locker room. Does that make them the most valuable to the club?

The obvious answer is, no.

Be logical and put your home bias aside. Messi had a huge impact for Inter Miami and the league… and he only played six matches.

Just imagine what it will be like when he gets a full season under his belt.

But, of course, I could be wrong.

Roll on, la familia, roll on.
