Inter Miami shouldn’t part ways with Marcelo Weigandt before finding a backup

It's a 50/50 really.

Inter Miami seems to have done everything right this past week. They beat Nashville SC in the first playoff encounter. They extended Yannick Bright’s contract for three more years, with an option for one more.

But the most important news of the last week was that Lionel Messi, the Herons captain, will continue at the front of the line until 2028.

If Inter Miami wants to compete in every tournament next season, it must secure its superstars. Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba are two cases apart because they’ve announced their retirement, so Inter Miami can’t really do anything about it.

However, the Herons should not take other players for granted, as they can’t afford to let players go without renewing because they don’t have enough depth in certain positions.

Marcelo Weigandt said there is no talk regarding his contract

Marcelo “Chelo” Weigandt is on loan from Boca Juniors until the end of December of this year. After that, in January, he is obliged to return to Argentina with the Xeneizes. Even though Weigandt isn’t the starting right-back, it’s Ian Fray; he shouldn’t be let go just because Mascherano doesn’t have a replacement for him.

Although some fans criticized the Argentine defender, the truth is that there isn’t another player to cover when Fray performs below expectations or is injured, as happened at the beginning of the season.

During an after-training conference, Chelo told the reporters that he is not focused right now on the renewal; he is focused on the playoffs, and his deal is the decision of the manager:

“It’s the coach’s decision. I’m very calm about what I do and what I give of myself.”, adding, “I haven’t spoken; I’m focused on the day-to-day, just trying to enjoy each moment. It doesn’t depend only on me. I’m very calm and fully focused on the competition.”

After dealing with his contract issues with he reporters, Marcelo Weigandt stated: “We came here to win things; we want to leave our mark on this club. We prepare ourselves to be starters, and then it’s up to the coach to decide.”

And as a Herons’ fan, you want to hear that from your players. They don’t hear and are not interested in the outside noise; they are focused on giving the club its first MLS Cup. As always, no interview could finish without talking about their captain, Lionel Messi.

The Argentine right-back said, “Having Leo is something extraordinary. Besides being a great person, it’s incredible to share the day-to-day with him, to talk or share a mate. It’s a memory that will stay with me forever.”, adding, “When we have some mates, we try to disconnect from everything — talk about family or what we do at home. It’s another way of enjoying ourselves, enjoying him off the pitch, which is something truly special.”

But returning to the important theme here, Inter Miami shouldn’t part ways with Weigandt until they have a backup plan. The good news about this is that Boca Juniors right-back room is crowded, so an extended loan could be done between the two parties.
